The plant collection at Landsendt is extensive. Many plants in the garden were collected in habitat as seed or cuttings and others obtained from other gardens or collectors. This page is to highlight the significant plants in the collection, either for their rarity, or a particular story that makes them interesting.
This picture shows Dick in Ecuador in the 1980s on one of his many plant collecting trips.
Landsendt sells a range of interesting plants and is also a gorgeous setting for weddings but it is really the plants and their stories that are the essence of Landsendt. Most people don't stop and think about plants but they are intrinsically linked to everything we do. In New Zealand and particularly northern NZ we are so fortunate to be able to grow such a wide variety of species. Landsendt is a perfect site, being frost free. Our challenge is our heavy clay soil in winter. We need to add a lot of organic matter to improve aeration. Many plants also struggle with the high winter rainfall. - average 1700mm per year.
A garden or plant collection is a bit like a family tree. A list of names. Not that interesting, but as soon as you find the stories then it all of a sudden it takes on a different meaning. I hope you find the stories about some of these plants interesting. Of course it is often as much about people as it is about plants.
