TAROS AND AROIDS
Aroids are the taro family which includes Taros, Anthuriums, Philodendrons, Zantedeschias, Armorphophallus, Arisaemas . They all have fleshy and usually large leaves and some have interesting flowers.
Many love wet conditions. All look great in a subtropical garden.
Aroids are mostly grown for their stunning dramatic foliage.
Philodendrons are epiphytic which means they can grow on virtually anything. They look great growing up palm trunks but equally can look good as a dramatic ground cover.
Taros generally love damp areas. Their leaves can get huge. Some can be treated as aquatic, such as the black stemmed taro. Mostly, the really fancy leafed forms sometimes available at garden centres are too tropical for outdoor gardens so we don't grow them.
